Pre-Labor

From 36 weeks

The body is transforming out of the third trimester into the pre-labour phase. This is a very important time to rest, gain as much strength and reserve of energy to sustain a labour.

From 36 weeks on we recommend that you come in weekly until labour begins, as receiving acupuncture will provide nourishment to you and your child’s qi (energy) and blood.

Acupuncture softens and ripens the cervix and prepares the pelvis for labour by moving stagnant qi and blood in tendons and ligaments in this area.
The style of acupuncture Nadja uses is called Japanese Meridian Therapy. It is different to the traditional Chinese style of acupuncture as we do not needle deeply. We work very gently and use fine needles.

This style of acupuncture is extremely relaxing and you will be pleasantly surprised by how little you feel the needles.

It is common for women
at this point in their pregnancy to experience:

·      Heart burn

·      Constipation

·      Varicose veins

·      Haemorrhoids

·      Leg cramps

·      Bleeding gums

·      Nasal congestion

·      Nose bleeds

·      Backache

·      Swelling of hands, feet and face

·      Difficultly in sleeping

·      Increased anxiety

·      Tiredness

·      Increase in frequent urination

Acupuncture and herbal medicine are appropriate in treating these conditions.

The pre-birth treatment

The pre-birth protocol consists of a treatment at 36 weeks, then at 37, 38, and 39 weeks. These treatments enhance optimum foetal position. They soften the ligaments in the pelvis, ripen the cervix and help build women’s energy.

If a woman passes her due date, treatment can be continued till labour begins. Acupuncture can be used for induction at this stage.

Studies from New Zealand have shown that when women receive acupuncture throughout their pregnancy they are more likely for labour to be shorter. Medical interventions such as medical inductions and caesarean sections are also less likely.
